Maria Denison writes character-driven suspense about secrets, complicated relationships, questionable decisions, and the inconvenient consequences of keeping too many things from the people you love.
Her five-book The Reflex series follows Cara Andre, a seemingly ordinary wife, mother, and business owner whose carefully constructed life begins to unravel when a past she thought she'd buried refuses to stay there. What begins as espionage and psychological suspense expands into something increasingly difficult to explain—and surrounds Cara with a growing collection of people who are every bit as complicated as she is.
Maria came to fiction after a career as an entrepreneur and business owner, bringing with her a firm belief that interesting lives don't stop being interesting at a certain age. She writes adult characters with histories, marriages, children, careers, friendships, regrets, desires, and enough accumulated baggage to make keeping secrets particularly hazardous. When she isn't writing, Maria is usually reading, traveling, spending time with family and friends, or finding some other perfectly reasonable way to avoid whatever she's supposed to be doing. She lives with her husband and remains convinced that life is complicated, humor is essential, and very few people are exactly who they first appear to be.
When I began The Reflex, one thing mattered to me from the start: I wanted to write about adults who had already lived.
My characters have histories. They've built careers, raised children, fallen in love, stayed married, or haven't. They have made mistakes, changed their minds, kept secrets, and learned that age doesn't necessarily make anyone wiser. It just gives us more experience to ignore.
I wanted Cara to be a woman with an established life before extraordinary circumstances crashed into it. She's capable, imperfect, funny, occasionally infuriating, and carrying considerably more baggage than anyone around her realizes. And she's surrounded by people who aren't much better.
That's the world I like writing about.
I don't believe complicated means unhappy. I don't believe romance, adventure, sexuality, reinvention, or danger belong only to the young. And I definitely don't believe people become less interesting as they get older.
The Reflex series is filled with suspense, relationships, espionage, humor, secrets, extraordinary abilities, and people trying to figure out whom they can trust—including themselves.
Happy endings? Those are subjective.
But life is complicated. Live it. Love it. You only get one chance at it.
